The roots of Atlantic Taxis start back in the
1840's, when Thomas Mitchell (born in Perranporth in 1805) was a
Carrier. The family business was continued by his second son Robert
(who was born in1846). By 1871 Robert had changed his proffession to
Bus Proprietor. Later he married Catherine and the business was
expanding and they had two sons,Richard and Thomas born 1879 and
1877 respectively. They continued the family fortunes on and by 1900
Robert had become a farmer; Richard had expanded the business with
the operation of horse drawn buses.
Robert then married and Bobby Mitchell was born in 1902. Bobby at
the age of 8 was undertaking work for the family business, taking
orders on Saturdays while off school. In the years that followed
Brian Mitchell (Bobby's Son) followed into the Mitchell's business
of Taxis and Coaches and in turn they were later joined by Geoffrey
Mitchell (Brian's Son)
Brian's premature and untimely death, through illness, and
Geoffrey's tragic loss in a fire, left Bobby the only serving male
Mitchell connected with the business. The Taxi operation passed into
new ownership in 1987 and Bobby a well known character died in 1992.
The business continues from the same premises that Bobby, Brian and
Geoffrey established.
